We are pleased to present our proof of concept for an AI transparency & disclosure standard for the film & TV production industry.
Why do we need a standard?
Moreover insurers are unable to price risk they can’t see,
AIMICI is developing this standard, covering a unified approach to documentation, transaprency and disclosure, to help simplify these ongoing challenges and improve effective communication around AI use in industry.
How we got here
This initial proposed standard was produced in partnership with the FRAMES project, and initially presented at the IBC on September 11th this year. This was the first trial of the standard on an AI-forward production, the hybrid “docufiction” novel concept (“One Small Crawl”), achieved in collaboration with colleagues from EBU and MovieLabs.
This most recent project concludes our first round of investigation, development and testing of the standard, which was also supported by testing on a diverse range of more “traditionally produced” production formats, including a high-end fictional feature film, and an unscripted documentary.
AIMICI Transparency & Disclosure Standard Concept – V0.1 – 11.09.26
Overview
The key to applied transparency is ensuring appropriate documentation and records are in place, so that appropriate disclosure is possible at different levels.
Our proposed standard sets out three levels of records, designed to fully cover the documentation and disclosure needs of all types of productions.
Together, they form a new standard for a type of “AI disclosure pack” that we believe should be part of every production
Level 1
Production AI Statement – For viewing audiences
A short, plain-language set of three statements, appropriate to show on screen and/or include in the credits, that the production creates according to the importance of the aspects of the AI used in the production and/or its compliance needs.
Our suggested format includes;
– Where/how AI was not used
– Where/how AI was used
– Human accountability in the process
Level 2
Production AI Card – For industry & stakeholders (Eg. internal staff, financiers, commissioners etc.)
A one-page reference detailing AI use cases and tools, and relevant attributes around risk, visibility and significance of the AI use.
This is organised into production stages and may include a high-level record of
– use cases and tools used to facilitate them, labelled with relevant attributes
– the roles of people involved who were responsible for human oversight over the governance process,
– the names of the businesses involved in record-keeping across production.
Level 3
Auditable AI Record – For auditors, legal, insurers etc.
A set of full records which cover necessary details of AI usage and governance on a production
This may include signed declarations, decisions and a high-level actions log, and further details about tools and licensing. It can also include consent records and granular actions & asset-level data, such as the machine-readable AI marks required by the EU AI Act.
What comes next?
The full details of the proposed standard are currently being documented in preparation for the initiation of a formal consultation with industry, which will look to commence on the week of the 14th of September 2026.
