AIMICI brings the AI transparency conversation to PACT members

On 21 October 2025, AIMICI hosted a webinar for PACT members on one of the most pressing issues facing independent producers today: AI transparency.

As AI tools become woven into every stage of production (from script development and pre-visualisation to post-production and marketing) the question is no longer whether to use AI, but how to use it responsibly, legally, and strategically.

WHY AI TRANSPARENCY MATTERS NOW

The creative industries are at an inflection point. AI adoption is accelerating, but so are the expectations around disclosure, accountability, and ethical use. For independent producers working with tight budgets and even tighter timelines, understanding how to navigate this landscape isn’t optional, it’s essential.

The pressure for transparency is coming from multiple directions. Broadcasters and distributors are beginning to ask detailed questions about AI usage in commissioned content. Funding bodies are considering disclosure requirements as part of their application processes. Meanwhile, audiences are increasingly curious about how AI is shaping the stories they watch.

During the session, AIMICI explored why having a transparency framework in place is critical for:

1. Safeguarding intellectual property – Documenting AI usage helps protect creative assets and clarifies ownership in an increasingly complex rights landscape. When AI tools are used in script development, character design, or visual effects, clear documentation ensures that your creative contributions remain protected.

2. Reducing legal risk – As regulations evolve and industry standards emerge, transparent AI practices help producers stay ahead of compliance requirements. From copyright considerations to data protection obligations, having robust documentation provides a crucial layer of protection.

3. Building trust with stakeholders – Broadcasters, distributors, and audiences increasingly expect clarity about AI’s role in content creation. Transparency demonstrates professionalism and accountability that can strengthen relationships across the value chain.

WHAT WE COVERED

The webinar unpacked practical approaches to AI transparency, including:
  • Good practices in documenting AI usage across the production pipeline – from initial concept development through final delivery
  • Preparing for emerging disclosure requirements from funders, broadcasters, and industry bodies
  • Frameworks that future-proof projects while maintaining creative integrity
  • Real-world strategies for balancing innovation with responsibility

The session also addressed common concerns: How much detail is necessary? What if AI usage changes during production? How do you document AI use without revealing proprietary workflows? These practical questions reflect the real challenges producers face when implementing transparency frameworks.

THE OPPORTUNTIY IN AI TRANSPARENCY

Here’s what often gets lost in conversations about AI regulation: transparency isn’t a burden—it’s a strategic advantage.

Producers who document their AI usage thoughtfully are better positioned to:
  • Negotiate rights and licensing with confidence – Clear documentation makes rights discussions straightforward
  • Demonstrate due diligence to investors and partners – Transparency signals professionalism and reduces perceived risk
  • Adapt quickly as industry standards crystallise – Producers with existing frameworks can pivot easily as requirements evolve
  • Differentiate themselves in a crowded marketplace – Responsible AI practices can become a competitive advantage when pitching projects

Transparency also protects the human creativity at the heart of every project. By clearly documenting where and how AI tools are used, producers affirm the irreplaceable value of their creative team’s vision, expertise, and storytelling craft.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The conversation around AI transparency is evolving rapidly. New disclosure requirements, industry guidelines, and legal precedents are emerging across the UK, EU, and US. For independent producers, staying ahead of these developments means building flexible frameworks that can adapt as standards emerge.

AIMICI is committed to helping independent producers navigate this landscape with clarity and confidence. Whether exploring AI for the first time or integrating it across multiple projects, having the right frameworks in place makes all the difference.

Thank you to PACT for hosting this important conversation. AIMICI Founder Ahsan Mallick and Managing Director Kathryn Webb led the session, drawing on their extensive experience helping film and TV producers implement responsible AI practices.
