The AI Officer is Here: What Does That Mean for Production Companies?

The role of AI Officer is no longer a Silicon Valley curiosity. It’s arriving in film and TV — and the pressures driving its adoption are coming from every corner of the production ecosystem.

AI Officers in Film & TV: The Big Players Are Already Moving

A year ago, the idea of a dedicated AI Officer in a production company might have felt like overkill. Not anymore.

Across film and TV, senior AI leadership roles are appearing at pace. Here are just a few examples:

  • Lionsgate named Kathleen Grace as the first ever Chief AI Officer at a Hollywood studio in February 2026. Her background? IP protection and licensing.
  • At AGBO, the Russo Brothers’ production company, Dr. Dominic Hughes was brought in as Chief Scientific Officer, with a PhD from Oxford and a career in machine learning at Apple.
  • BBC Studios hired Alice Taylor from Disney’s StudioLAB to head a new AI Creative Lab, bridging creative production and emerging tech.
  • Fremantle appointed Kevin Lingley as EVP of Global AI, bringing platform engineering experience from Spotify, Amazon Prime Video, and Microsoft.
  • And at Mediawan Group, Max Wiedemann, co-founder of the company behind The Lives of Others and Dark, became one of the few AI leads to come from a production background.


This list continues to grow, fast. Disney, Netflix, Sony, and NBCUniversal have all been hiring for AI-related senior roles, with some commanding salaries well above $200,000. The demand for AI leadership in entertainment is clear, and so is the cost.

The titles vary, the backgrounds vary, but the challenge is the same – breadth. The full scope of what senior AI leadership needs to cover in a production context is remarkably broad: creative workflows, IP and licensing risk, talent consent frameworks, insurer and distributor requirements, data security, regulatory awareness, and team upskilling. It’s a lot to ask of any single hire, leaving many in these positions overstretched and under-resourced.

AI Innovation Without AI Governance Is Building On Sand

What’s notable about many of the AI Officer roles emerging in the industry is that they’ve been primarily tasked with adoption and innovation — finding new tools, creating efficiencies, pushing creative boundaries. That matters, but it’s only half the picture.

Without proper governance alongside innovation, production companies are building on sand. Teams struggle to fully unlock the creative potential of AI when their teams don’t know what they’re allowed to use, who’s accountable for what, or how to demonstrate responsible use to the stakeholders who are increasingly asking for it.

Surely the real value of an AI Officer is in building a safe playpen for creative ambition to play within. Get the governance right — the policies, the roles and responsibilities, the working processes that actually map to the complex web of requirements your company faces — and you create the conditions for genuine innovation. Without it, every creative AI experiment carries unquantified risk.

What Does an AI Officer Actually Need to Cover?

We believe an AI Officer is a senior leadership role accountable for how a company adopts, governs, and uses AI. In a production context, that means setting AI policy, defining clear roles and responsibilities around AI use within teams, and building governance processes that are actually achievable — not theoretical frameworks that sit in a drawer, but working practices that reflect the complex, overlapping landscape of requirements from insurers, commissioners, regulators, and unions.

It also means advising on responsible use across workflows, managing stakeholder relationships around AI, and making sure the business is equipped to navigate a fast-moving landscape.

Why Pressure is Building Now

Over the past year, many production companies have moved beyond experimenting with AI into something more serious — using tools and processes regularly across development, pre-production and post. But adoption has outpaced governance. Most companies are still relying on a “figure it out as we go” approach, and that’s becoming increasingly difficult to sustain. The pressure to get it right is coming from multiple directions at once, often with conflicting expectations.

  • Distributors and commissioners each have their own AI rules, and they don’t always align. Netflix now requires all production partners to disclose any planned use of generative AI, with any AI outputs appearing in final deliverables requiring written approval before proceeding. Channel 4 published its own AI principles in May 2025. The BBC has separate guidance. Disney has its own framework. If you’re making content for multiple commissioners or selling to multiple distributors, you’re navigating a patchwork of overlapping and sometimes contradictory requirements. In our own research, we’ve found over 800 recommendations relevant to production companies using AI. The sheer volume of guidance is itself becoming a barrier, creating a situation where teams are forced to interpret and negotiate their AI approach project by project.
     
  • Insurers want to know who’s accountable. Completion bond insurers are actively developing AI disclosure requirements, with primary risk categories including IP liability from unauthorised AI training data, budget variance from AI tool underperformance, and chain-of-title complications in AI-generated content. Productions with documented AI governance report cleaner bond conversations, and getting ahead of these disclosures can save weeks at a critical financing moment. If you can’t point to someone who’s overseeing your AI use, expect harder conversations at the financing stage.
     
  • Union agreements are setting new standards around consent and disclosure. SAG-AFTRA’s TV/Theatrical contract introduced detailed provisions around digital replicas, requiring clear and conspicuous informed consent from performers before creating or using AI-generated versions of their voice or likeness. Their core guardrails centre on clear consent, fair compensation, and performer control over their performances. These standards are becoming industry expectations across all productions, not just union work, creating new frameworks for consent and disclosure that extend beyond traditional union boundaries.
     
  • The tools are moving faster than anyone can track. New AI capabilities are emerging quarterly, and it’s tempting to get bogged down in the terms and conditions of every tool. But T&Cs are often a red herring. What actually matters is understanding the levels of risk each tool introduces in your specific production context and taking a proportionate, risk-based approach. Someone needs to be making those assessments consistently and making them well.

Whatever stage your company is at with AI, these are useful questions to sit with to help understand if you need an AI Officer today:

  • Do you know which AI tools your teams are already using, and what risks they carry?
  • If a distributor asked you tomorrow to demonstrate your AI governance, could you?
  • Do you have clear roles and responsibilities around AI decisions, or is it ad hoc?
  • Are you navigating multiple sets of stakeholder requirements, and do you know where they conflict?
  • Could you explain your AI use to an insurer, a union rep, and a commissioner in the same conversation?
