We’re proud to share that AIMICI recently participated in the British Film Institute’s invite-only event discussing their much-anticipated “AI in the Screen Sector: Perspectives and Paths Forward” report, hosted in collaboration with CoSTAR.

The event was hosted by Rishi Coupland, Director of Research & Innovation at BFI, and featured panelists alongside industry leaders including:

Phil Adlam – Chief Technology Officer at Production Park and CoSTAR LiveLAB; Head of XPLOR
Graham Jack – Chief Technology Officer at beloFX; former VFX Supervisor
Katharina Gellein Viken – Award-winning filmmaker, showrunner, and AI strategist; co-founder of Metrotone Media
Martin D. Adams – Ethical AI entrepreneur and thought leader at Metaphysic.ai
Kathryn Webb – AIMICI MD

The conversation reinforced several critical insights that align directly with AIMICI’s mission:

  • Transparency is Essential: The industry needs to uncover the full extent of AI already being used in productions and VFX – revealing the complete “AI iceberg” rather than just the visible tip
  • Real Education Over Tool Training: Rather than constantly chasing new AI tools, the sector needs comprehensive education to bridge the fundamental “understanding gap” about AI’s role in creative work, at scale.
  • Human Creativity Must Remain Central: Any AI adoption must commercially incentivize high-quality human storytelling and ensure accessibility across all levels of the industry

Kathryn emphasised a crucial point: while the BFI report provides an excellent foundation of information, the industry now needs “less reports, more action.” The focus must shift from continuous analysis to practical implementation of responsible AI solutions.

Why This Matters
The BFI report and subsequent discussion highlighted exactly what we see daily in our consultancy work: the industry has a strong appetite for practical guidance on responsible AI implementation. The event was also livestreamed, extending these important conversations to a broader audience of creatives and industry professionals.
